Over the past decade Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has called on countless friends, from Tracy  Chapman and Patti Smith to Metallica, to help him raise money for the Southern California school he started, the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. One artist, however, has topped his wish list: Neil Young. Last night Flea’s dream became reality when the Chili Peppers and Young teamed up for an incredible night of music in the backyard of the gorgeous Paramour Mansion in Silverlake.

Neil Young turned up in Los Angeles on Wednesday night at a hilltop mansion in Silver Lake that hosted the annual benefit concert for the Silverlake Conservatory music school, the event spearheaded by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, singer Anthony Kiedis and which also featured a performance by the Chili Peppers.

An audience of about 600 paid a minimum of $2,000 apiece to be in on the intimate performance and take part in a silent auction of donated works of art by luminaries who included Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Shepard Fairey, Raymond Pettibon, filmmaker Gus Van Sant, musician-actor John Lurie and several others.

Young included a couple of lesser-known songs in a 35-minute solo acoustic set and praised the Chili Peppers for their participation over the years in his annual Bridge School benefit shows in Northern California.

Neil Young to Perform Oct. 30 for music conservancy

Neil Young will perform at a benefit for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music that Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea and Anthony Kiedis will host.

The organization announced Friday (Oct. 4)  that the event will take place Oct. 30 in Silverlake (Los Angeles), Calif. Red Hot Chili Peppers will also perform, according to The Associated Press,

Flea founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001. It facilitates music education and offers music lessons and scholarships.

The RHCP bassist says in a statement that he’s “grateful” for all the help given to the organization. He adds that Young performing at the event “is the greatest blessing.”

USA Today writes: If you’ve got $2,000 lying around, or nine other friends that would be willing to split a $25,000 bill, then the Silverlake Conservatory of Music is your new BFF. So is Flea, who founded the school. To sweeten the deal, the RHCP guys recruited Neil Young to play.

Flea and fellow Red Hot Chili Pepper Anthony Keidis will host the benefit and proceeds will go toward building a new facility and beef up Silverlake’s scholarship program.

“Going into our 13th year of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, flourishing with 700 students as a non-profit community music school, I could not be more grateful for all the people who have helped us out along the way,”Flea says in a press release. “Having one of my favorite musicians Neil Young perform to help out the school is the greatest blessing! This is gonna be the funnest fundraiser ever! All of us working together, making L.A. a better city, and educating the kids! Yay!”

Music, dinner and a silent auction will take place and will feature donations from Marc Jacobs, Tony Hawk, Pearl Jam, Gucci and others. The event costs $2,000 per guest, and a 10-seat table is $25,000.
