City and Colour to open Ottawa Fest-replace Neil & the Horse

The Ottawa Citizen has announced that City and Colour will replace Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Ottawa Folk Festival on Sept. 4.

The Juno-winning band led by Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green has agreed to step into the headlining slot of the festival’s opening night, the newspaper writes.

Organizers had to scramble after losing Young, who cancelled his North American dates to give guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro more time to heal after breaking his hand earlier this month.

“It’s definitely been a challenging week, but I’d say I’m very pleased that Dallas Green (City and Colour) could accommodate us on such short notice,” says festival executive/programming director Mark Monahan in a news release. “He’ll make a great opening night for the festival.”

Young’s tour mate, Patti Smith, will also perform, as originally scheduled, accompanied by her band.

Refunds, refunds, refunds and more bands at Lockn’

Trey Anastasio Band, Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, Indecision and the Jeff Sipe Trio had been added to the lineup of the Sept. 7  four-day Lockn’ festival  at the 5,000-acre Oak Ridge Estate in Arlington, Virginia.

With Neil Young and Crazy Horse having canceled their appearance at next month’s inaugural Lockn’ music festival in Nelson County, event organizers say refunds are available, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

For more information on Lockn’, formerly called the Interlocken Music Festival, visit locknfestival.com.

The newspaper says concertgoers seeking a refund should contact the ticket provider, Musictoday, via email at tix@musictoday.com or by phone at (800) 594-8499 by Friday and send their tickets back to the company no later than Aug. 31.

Organizers stressed that refunds would not be given until returned tickets were received by Musictoday.

Canadian-born singer Gordon Lightfoot will replace Neil Young & Crazy Horse at the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic on Aug. 31 at the Christie Lake Conservation Area in Dundas, Ontario, according to CBC Hamilton.

Lightfoot, 74, was brought in to replace Young after Crazy Horse’s guitarist Frank Sampedro injured his hand. The band has cancelled the North American leg of its current tour, including a headlining spot at the Ottawa Folk Festival, CBC reported.

Many have bemoaned the fact that they bought tickets to the picnic just to see Young and Crazy Horse. The organizers have offered a partial discount to ticketholders after the band pulled out of the show.

Organizers are offering a $40 refund. The new ticket price is $99.50.

“Ticket buyers who purchased through TicketMaster will be contacted by TicketMaster,” Gauthier said. “Ticket buyers who purchased from consignment locations, can pick up their refund beginning Saturday Aug. 24 at 10 a.m.”

Ticket refund debate

So far one concert venue has issued a press release stating that ticket-holders who wanted to see Neil & The Horse play will received a partial refund.

201304011-niel-x600-1365729134September Seventh Entertainment Limited announced  at a press conference that the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic will be offering partial discounts to Picnic ticket holders in light of the cancellation of Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

A press release states more acts will be added.

Canceled tour dates include:  The August 31, 2013 Greenbelt Harvest Picnic at Christie Lake Conservation Area in Ontario; Sept. 2  with Patti Smith at Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY (promised to be the smallest place that Neil & the Horse would have played in recent memory); Sept. 4 Ottawa Folk Festival, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; and Sept. 7 Interlocken Music Festival at Oakridge Farm in Arlington, Virginia.

Since they are all festivals it’s possible none of the ticketholders will get full refunds but we have to wait and see. The ticket question has sparked debate with disappointed fans.

No going on without Poncho.

Now that cancellations of the Neil Young with Crazy Horse Tour has hit the USA, fans are abuzz with ticket refund angst as to whether they will get back the money they invested in concerts that were scheduled.

Frank “Poncho” Sampedro’s hurt hand earlier scrubbed dates in Sweden and Belgium, though at that time band members hoped a series of planned North American concerts would still be held. Doctors have since apparently recommended additional healing time.

Canceled tour dates include:  The August 31, 2013 Greenbelt Harvest Picnic at Christie Lake Conservation Area in Ontario; Sept. 2  with Patti Smith at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY (promised to be the smallest place that Neil & the Horse would have played in recent memory); Sept. 4 Ottawa Folk Festival, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; and Sept. 7 Interlocken Muisc Festival at Oakridge Farm in Arlington, Virginia.

According to Something Else! Reviews bassist Crazy Horse Billy Talbot has reached out to disappointed fans.

“I want to be sure each of you know that all four of us in the Horse are extremely disappointed in this turn of events,” Talbot says. “We’ve never had to cancel a show before.”

Talbot says Crazy Horse has developed an all-for-one attitude that makes it impossible to go on without someone like Sampedro.

“After being together for 40 years, we know there’s no way we can play without Poncho, or any one of us,” Talbot adds. “The four of us have to be there for it to be NYCH. If there’s any way that we could have played these shows, we would be there. This is an extremely hard twist of fate for us to accept. One of the reasons that we love what we’re doing and it rocks so much, is the fact that we respect that it comes from the four of us. A unified passion.”
