Ryan Book at Music Times writes that this week marked an interesting accomplishment for Neil Young, who debuted an album in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 for the 40th time with The Monsanto Years, which opened at no. 21.
Book writes: “Many of the reviews for Monsanto have been mixed—either as a question of its musical content or because of Young’s politics, which tackles numerous companies including the titular Monsanto and Starbucks. Regardless of what you think about Young’s politics, and even if you dislike his style personally, you’ve got to hand it to him for having cracked the Top 40 on the albums chart 40 times. Music Times isn’t going to run through all 40 of those entries, but we’ll give you a quick rundown of the seven highest-charting albums in Young’s catalogue. You may be surprised at some that did…and didn’t…make the cut.”

Monsanto: “Many of us at Monsanto have been and are fans of Neil Young. Unfortunately, for some of us, his current album may fail to reflect our strong beliefs in what we do every day to help make agriculture more sustainable. We recognize there is a lot of misinformation about who we are and what we do – and unfortunately several of those myths seem to be captured in these lyrics.”
Statement to BillBoardbiz
The agrochemical company Monsanto has fired back at Neil Young for his album ‘The Monsanto Years.’
“The farmer knows he’s got to grow what he can sell, Monsanto, Monsanto / So he signs a deal for GMOs that makes life hell with Monsanto, Monsanto,” Young sings on the title track. “Every year he buys the patented seeds / Poison-ready they’re what the corporation needs, Monsanto.”
An article in Rolling Stone states: The Monsanto Years (which comes out on June 29th) also takes on Starbucks for their use of GMOs. “Starbucks has not taken a position on the issue of GMO labeling,” the company said. “As a company with stores and a product presence in every state, we prefer a national solution.”
Chevron refused to comment on Young’s lyrics, though Walmart did bite. “As you might have seen recently, Walmart raised its lowest starting wage to $9 an hour,” they told Billboard. “We’re proud of the opportunity we provide people to build a career and have a chance at a better life.”
Neil Young and Promise of the Real kick off their North American summer tour July 5th at the Marcus Ampitheater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

No, not the latest “Storytone,” but instead his “Greatest Hits.”
Neil Young’s Jimmy Fallon appearance last week has driven sales of his ‘Greatest Hits’ by 4000 units and moved the album up to the no 84 spot on the Billboard chart, according to Billboard.
Neil Young performed his classic ‘Old Man’ with Jimmy Fallon impersonating Neil Young on NBC’s The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon on February 4.
According to Billboard the Neil Young compilation, featuring ‘Old Man’, scored its highest chart ranking since 2005 and best one week sales since 2010.
Downloads for the single track of ‘Old Man’ also topped 9000 sales last week, giving the track its highest sales for a single week ever.

Neil Young tells Billboard we can expect to hear “A Letter Home,” the album he recorded at Jack White’s Third Man studio in Nashville, “very soon,” most likely this spring.
The idea for “A Letter Home” appeared to be hatched by a version of Bert Jansch’s “The Needle of Death,” which Young recorded for Record Store Day 2013 in White’s 1947 Voice-o-Graph booth. “They’re songs that I love, songs that changed my life, songs that made it so that I understood what someone else was saying to me, songs by greater writers.”
Also, if Young has his way, he’ll also do something symphonic in the near future.
“I’d like to make a record with a full-blown orchestra, live — a mono recording with one mic,” he explains. “I want to do something like that where we really record what happened, with one point of view and the musicians moved closer and farther away, the way it was done in the past. To me that’s a challenge and it’s a sound that’s unbelievable, and you can’t get it any other way. So I’m into doing that.”
Young is also in “the final editing stages” for his second book, “Special Deluxe,” a follow-up to his 2012 memoir “Waging Heavy Peace.” This book, Young says, will be out this year and “focuses on my life as regards to my transportation, as regards to my love for cars. So it’s a history through automobiles, and it’s a history of automobiles and it’s a history of the environmental impact of automobiles. And it’s a projection into the future of automobiles. It has it’s own agenda that develops over the book.”
