Rock Legend Neil Young Visits Mayflower Oil Spill Site
Updated: 10:50 am Published: 10:43 am
MAYFLOWER, AR – As cleanup work continues at the site of the Mayflower oil spill, some unexpected eyes are watching.
A local blog post tells of a woman’s encounter with a rock music icon as she drove near the spill site on Monday.
The legendary Neil Young, a known environmentalist, was spotted by Shelli Russell as he drove around the area in a 1959 Lincoln convertible. The big car was once a gas guzzler, but it’s been redone into a hybrid that gets 100 mpg, writes Russell.
Here’s her story:

Crazy Horse guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampredo told Rolling Stone the song “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” came together after a show was canceled in the former U.S.S.R.
He also claimed that most of the band didn’t even know the song when it was played for the first time on February 21, 1989, in Seattle. The song was just hours old.
Of course now the song is an American anthem.

In a new Rolling Stone interview Frank ‘Poncho” Sampedro says his gut is telling him this may be the last Crazy Horse/Neil Young tour.
After all, he is 64-year old and the “baby” of the band.
Those words are heartbreaking, leaving a lump in the throats of devoted fans who have followed the Horse and Neil for decades.
In a Q & A format Andy Greene at RS interviews Poncho, and when Green asks about playing “Hurricane” during a torrential downpour in Australia, Poncho replies:
“Oh, that was so crazy. It was raining off and on, kind of sprinkling all day there. Then we we started playing “Hurricane” and a torrential downpour came. I mean, literally the organ stopped working it go so wet. I had to play guitar on that song for the first time in history.

Crazy Horse Guitarist Frank ‘Poncho’ Sampedro: ‘My Gut Tells Me This Is the Last Tour’
An in-depth discussion about Sampedro’s 40-year history playing alongside Neil Young

Crazy Horse guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro has been playing with Neil Young for 40 years, but he’s worried their current world tour might be the last one. “I just think once it stops it’s going to be kind of hard to get it rolling again,” he says on the phone from his home in Hawaii. “My gut tells me this is really the last tour. I hate saying their ages, but I’m 64 and I’m the baby of the band. I love playing and we’re playing as good as we ever did, but at any time something could go down with any one of us.”
Young and Crazy Horse have been touring heavily since last August, playing gigs that sometimes stretch beyond two-and-a-half hours. “Our shows are physical,” says Poncho. “It takes a lot of energy to play that much. It just seems at some point something is going to break. I already had an operation on my thumb. Neil’s wrist bugs him, and he has to tape it when he plays. You can’t fool time. You can’t count on this happening again in five years.”

The above quote came from Graham Nash, and he’s talking about the release of a live CSN&Y album from their 1974 reunion tour.
Tentative release date is Aug. 27.
Andy Greene from the Rolling Stone writes:
They have yet to settle on a title. “I want to call it What Could Possibly Go Wrong?” says Crosby. “I’m going to dig my heels and seriously fight for that. You can’t hear that without laughing your head off. It’s important to look at yourselves with a sense of humor in retrospect and realize what gigantic egos we had and what idiots we were. But I think it’s a great title. If I don’t get it, I’ll threaten to quit the band – at which point I’ll be reminded that there’s no band to quit!”
The 1974 tour wrapped at London’s Wembley Stadium on September 14th. They filmed that night and at least one other, but don’t expect to see any video footage in this package. “I don’t think Neil’s gonna go for that,” says Crosby. “He doesn’t like the way he looked. He doesn’t like his haircut on that tour.”
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young haven’t toured in seven years. “What do we do after this live album comes out?” asks Nash. “Do we just let it lie there and fucking die, or do we do limited promotion? That’s not cowardly, but that’s not the way to do it. In my perfect world – and I’m only talking about what I would do – I would delay the release of this until the spring of 2014. I would ask David and Stephen and Neil to take three months off their busy lives and go out on tour to promote this record.”
