New album cover “American Gothic” inspired

neil-young-the-monsanto-yearsNeil Young has just revealed the track list and album cover for his next album, The Monsanto Years, due out June 29.

The album is a collaboration with Promise of the Real, a band that includes Willie Nelson‘s sons Lukas and Micah.

According to Brian Ives, writing at Radio.com, here’s the tracklist for The Monsanto Years.

Neil Young The Monsanto Years Tracklist

1. A New Day For Love
2. Wolf Moon
3. People Want To Hear About Love
4. Big Box
5. A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop
6. Workin’ Man
7. Rules Of Change
8. Monsanto Years
9. If I Don’t Know

The album cover  is a painting of Young with a woman who looks to be his current paramour, Daryl Hannah, posed in a tribute to “American Gothic.”

And it’s unlikely that you’ll hear the album on the sound system at your local Starbucks. That’s because the first single, “A Rock Star Bucks a Coffee Shop” is a bit critical of the chain.  You can watch the video at Democracy Now; the song includes lyrics like “Yeah, I want a cup of coffee but I don’t want the GMOs/ I’d like to start my day off, without helping Monsanto” (tip: to see the clip, fast forward to about 26:30 into the video).

Young and Promise of the Real kick off a U.S. tour July 5 at the Milwaukee Summerfest. See the tour dates Rebel Content Tour

Anthony Crawford says Neil Young did nothing for me

harvesters_zpscoqzs2ssAnthony Crawford,  veteran singer/songwriter and guitarist a half the duo Sugarcane Jane says Neil Young’s control issues took the fun out of playing with him.

“He’s a fantastic musician,” Crawford says of Young, “but for the most part he’s a hard guy to belly up to. He doesn’t have that many true friends, but that’s his choice. I was a servant to him. That’s probably where I went wrong,” Crawford says in a lengthy interview with NoDepression, a publication about “Roots Music.”

Crawford played with Young back in the 1980’s when he was in the band International Harvesters as well as the Shocking Pinks.

“I started my career late. I gave my career, my life, to Neil Young. Pretty much. That didn’t do anything for me other than make me some temporary really good money,” Crawford says in the interview.  “Something about Neil’s changed. His policies have changed. He’s doing things to me that… I’ve seen him not compromise his art — or following his muse he puts it — for anybody or anything.”

Crawford said in the 80s Neil was still a young guy and it was fun. Years later,  touring in 2007/08/09/10 all over Europe and the United States  it was “all just so controlling and no fun.”

Crawford says: “I was out making these little vignette movies called On the Road with a Rock Star, and so I put them out on my YouTube channel. Very few of them had him in it at all. It was mainly what I do on my time off on the road with a rock star…. Well, he emailed me one day and said, ‘In my circles you’re not very popular for having those blogs,’ as he called it, ‘your rock-star blogs. You should take those down.’ I wrote back and I said, “Wow, coming from the guy that never does anything anybody ever suggests — and you’ve taught me one thing and one thing only, to never compromise your art for anybody — that is surprising to me.”

Neil Young announced he will perform a concert July 3 in Edmonton to benefit the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Legal Defense Fund.

Young will be joined at Rexall Place by Canadian band Blue Rodeo, according to Global News Canada.

Young has been a vocal supporter of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation in its fight to stop oilsands development.

Last year, he held similar Honour the Treaties concerts in cities across Canada, including Calgary, the article stated.

“It’s the greediest, most destructive and disrespectful demonstration of something run amok that you can ever see,” Young said of the Alberta oilsands in January 2014. “There is no way to describe it. It’s truly a disaster.”

In 2013, Young came under fire for comparing Fort McMurray, Alberta to the Japanese city destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945.

Chief Allan Adam welcomed news of another benefit concert by Young.

“With the support of Neil Young and fans we are creating more accountability from our governments for the safe guarding of our lands, rights and future generations in Alberta, Canada and beyond,” said Adam, in a release.

“Our people, our climate and our planet can no longer afford to be economic hostages in the race to industrialize the earth. We must act now for the future generations.”

Tickets for the Edmonton concert start at $45 and go on sale May 1.
