TIFF: Jonathan Demme Talks Neil Young and Katrina Docs, Exclusive Clip — Thompson on Hollywood
New York filmmaker Jonathan Demme is heading for the Toronto Fest with the latest film in his Neil Young concert trilogy, Neil Young Journeys [formerly known as “Neil Young Life”], which follows 2006’s Heart of Gold and Neil Young Trunk Show in 2009.

And Demme’s love of Neil Young goes back to the start of his music-making in the late 60s. Young wrote the end-title song for Philadelphia; Demme met the musician soon after, who told him he’d love him to shoot a music video someday. “Then I saw Greendale,” says Demme, and contacted Young, who called him again six months later. He wanted to turn Greendale into a film, but Demme was already in pre-production on The Manchurian Candidate.
Later Young called Demme and told him he was finishing his album “Prairie Wind,” which became the basis of their moving Nashville concert movie Heart of Gold. “That show was never performed anywhere else, only the two nights,” says Demme. “The whole thing was hand-crafted. It was just magic.” The costumes and backdrops in the show were custom-made.
Demme also shot four shows of the 40-city Chrome Dreams world tour for Trunk Show. Warners has yet to release the DVD. “It’s frustrating,” Demme says.

This past May, Neil Young brought his solo tour to Toronto’s Massey Hall, an iconic venue in the city of his birth. Jonathan Demme was on hand to capture the two nights, which highlighted new songs from the album Le Noise, produced by Daniel Lanois, mixed with classics like “Ohio” and “I Believe in You.” At sixty-five, Young retains a youthful vitality and musical curiosity that balances his wisdom and experience.
It’s no wonder he’s been an inspiration to the likes of Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth. In Neil Young Journeys, Demme intersperses the Massey Hall concert footage with brief scenes from a road trip through Ontario.
Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbours and their daughters. As he drives past bulldozers transforming the landscape, he remarks, “It’s all gone… it’s still in my head.”

Young will be joined by Arcade Fire, Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews, Mumford and Sons, Beck and Los Invisibles featuring Carlos Santana for the weekend festivities.
Other artists listed on concert’s official site include jazz queen Diana Krall (Saturday), Tony Bennett (Sunday) and Foo Fighters (Sunday). Yes, it seems the stars are all turning out for the cause closest to Young’s heart.
Check out the clip promoting the 2011 Bridge School Benefit Concert below and get hyped on the weekend, which raises money for the special school Young and wife Pegi started back in 1986 to help their son Ben. Heavy hitters like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Crosby, Stills, Nash were on hand to kick off the inaugural concert, which has become a staple on the calendar for music lovers (with the exception of 1987 when the benefit was canceled).
Tickets go on sale Sept. 16 via Live Nation, with proceeds going towards assisting children with disabilities and communication needs.
“This delay happened for a multitude of reasons,” Richie Furay’s manager David Spero tells Rolling Stone. “The plan is still to tour next year. There’s not a timeline at this point. Buffalo Springfield is at the top of Neil’s list or priorities. It’s just a matter of finding a time that works for everybody.”

Despite earlier reports, Buffalo Springfield will not be hitting the road early next year after canceling plans to tour this fall. And Stephen Stills says they probably won’t tour for a while. He tells us, “Neil [Young] started a book and said, ‘Don’t mess with the muse, man.'” Stills adds that he’ll probably tour next summer with Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Buffalo Springfield reunited in 2010 for Neil Young’s annual Bridge School benefit and then played seven shows this past June — six in California and the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. CSN was scheduled to play shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre tonight and tomorrow, but will perform only tomorrow night, as tonight’s show has been pushed to November 6th with a second show to be announced.
They’ll also make up last Saturday’s canceled benefit on Long Island, New York later this week. Stills will tour this fall with Young’s wife, Pegi Young, as his opening act. David Crosby and Graham Nash will tour Europe this fall. http://www.wmgk.com/music/news/story.aspx?ID=1530078
