Carinthia West photo from Vanity Fair
The new issue of Vanity Fair features the work of Carinthia West and her photographs from the 1970s, including a rare photo of Neil Young driving one of his vintage cars, a Cadillac affectionately named “Pearl.”
Her star-studded work includes Mick Jack, Keith Richards, Rod Stewart, Carly Simon and a variety of movie stars.
The photo of Neil was taken at Woodside, Calif in 1976. She writes:
“This photo of Neil Young was taken at his ranch as he was driving past in his vintage Cadillac, lovingly nicknamed Pearl. In my opinion, Neil is one of the most powerful and charismatic presences in rock and roll. He is a man who commands respect yet at the same time has a hugely playful sense of humor. In this shot, he was leaning out the car window, with that big Canadian smile, to crack a joke about my English accent. I was riding one of his horses, so I’m glad the shot is in focus and I didn’t drop the camera.”

Here is a music memorabilia website called Backstage Auctions (www.backstageauctions.com) and they currently have a ‘Rock & Pop’ auction going on that contains over 700 lots, including five that are dedicated to Neil Young. What makes four of the five lots newsworthy is that they are consigned by the family of Bob Clark; the drummer of The Squires between 1964 and 1965. Included is an original drum head, postcards written from the road, as well as several fantastic photos, showing Neil Young in his truly early days.

The Winnebago Free Press offers a glimpse into the life of Neil Young’s mother, Rassy Ragland, who was a panelist on a a popular quiz show.
The article states: “Rassy Young was a truly unique character. “She was absolutely herself and I enjoyed her immensely,” recalled friend Nola Halter. “She was so funny, marvellously witty and very zany. She had a little blue English car which she drove in the wrong gear, in the wrong speed, in the middle of two lanes, swearing her head off at all these other drivers who got in her way. The road was hers.”
She bought Neil a Gretsch guitar and a Fender amplifier when requests to his father were rebuffed.
“She was absolutely hilarious when she phoned me and told me that Neiler had bought a hearse [Mort],” laughed Nola. “In that droll manner she had she said, ‘Well, if that’s what the kid wants.'”
It’s fitting that Neil seems so comfortable in the limelight these days: concert tours, talk shows about his book, documentary films, cruising the country in his Lincvolt. His parents were both celebrities, his father Scott Young, a Canadian writer/broadcaster.
