Neil gets defiant at Newcastle

“Sing it like you mean it?” asked Neil Young, responding to something shouted from the crowd, pulling an
incredulous, self-amused face.

“Why the **** would you sing it if you didn’t  mean it?” Good one Neil.

Neil & Crazy Horse played the Metro Radio Arena in New Castle, England on June 10. The review by Neil McCormick at the Telegraph  opines:” He is not really interested in crowd-pleasing, which is precisely why he pleases his crowd so much.”

As for the 2 1/2 hour set he says “the sheer howling pleasure of it was utterly infectious.”

German reviews of Neil & the Unicorns? in Berlin

For those of you who can’t wait, one of the first reviews of the June 2 Berlin concert that kicked off the European Alchemy Tour of Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

3893440_0_urn-newsml-dpa-com-20090101-130603-99-02978_large_4_3Dressed all in black Neil, along with Poncho, Billy and Ralph played to a crowd of 22,000 at Waldbuehne.

One article describes the Horse as: “Ancient warriors” and “Not virtuosos but instinct musicians.” Apt descriptions.

Another calls Neil “The Last Unicorn.” But we already knew this..;-)

Neil Young live at the end of the world

Another review of the New Zealand show by correspondent Derek Pringle from “The Telegraph.” He aptly labels Neil as “one of the great songwriters of his time.”

neil1_2524840aInteresting review that compares Young’s performance to Sixto Rodriquez, who had managed to fill a smaller arena in Wellington a week earlier.

Obviously a fan, Pringle describes a sublime scene in the Neil Young with Crazy Horse show that leaves a lasting impression.

He writes:

“There is a moment, about two hours into Neil Young’s sell-out concert at the Vector Arena in Auckland, where he plants his left index finger on the top string of his guitar and grinds it slowly up the fret board incanting many of his great albums as he goes.

The slowly ascending note is meant to indicate time travel, backwards, but Young is just showing off as he lists the gems in his back catalogue — Rust Never Sleeps, Tonight’s the Night, Harvest, After the Gold Rush, Everyone Knows This is Nowhere etc etc.”

“Surfer Joe” first time in 23 years

Neil Young dug deep into his Crazy Horse set last night in Auckland, performing ‘Surfer Joe and Moe The Sleaze’.

This was the last night of the Australian tour – March 21 at the Vector Arena, Auckland, New Zealand.

Paul Cashmere of Noise 11, Breaking News and Interviews reports in a short piece.

Next stop Berlin on June 2.

Another meatier review from the New Zealand Herald

“Dressed in flannel shirt, Aboriginal flag t-shirt , workboots and comfortable jeans, a jowly Young reworked some of his vast past without sentimentality. He was in fine voice and – despite a strapped right wrist – ferocious guitar.”
